ASSOCIATES
As
mentioned under company, Uview
was established in 1994, and has been quietly toiling away in the
engine rooms of its associate companies ever since. Below is a summary
of our associate companies and some of their more important sub-sections,
as well logo representation and links to all of those listed.
The
first of these associates to find its feet in the Southern African
marketplace was Steerage
Marine which has been the primary (and for many years, only)
Southern African Marine internet portal. Trading as Steerage Information
& Marketing, the Steerage website has, since inception in 1994,
been the 'front-end' for virtually all of the Uview associate
companies and sub-sites.
In
1998/99 Steerage
became the first and only Marine Search Engine on the African continent,
thereby enforcing its position as the primary portal for Marine, Boating
& Watersport pursuits on the continent. An informal audit of limited
sectors of the Steerage
Marine client base in June/July 1999 elicited some astonishing
facts which were able to be roughly translated into numbers ..........
the revenue generated for South Africa through the new media solutions
engendered by a limited sector of the Steerage
client base, and the online marketing of those solutions amounted
to a staggering US$300 million for the period April 1994 - July 1999.........this,
despite the fact that internet usage in South Africa only began to
be recognised by most companies in the country as a 'possible' marketing
tool during late 1999 / early 2000.
Steerage
has made its mark, not the least of which is the fact that it (unlike
many of its more recent clones) "cares" for the industry
which it markets, and in many cases represents.
- African
International Shopping Mall (AISM)
During
1996 an experiment was conducted by the Uview / Steerage
directors.........an experiment to see waht (if any) interest there
might be out there for African Art and Artifacts....... and AISM
(African International Shopping Mall) was born.
In early 1997 the AISM
site was chosen by the ITU (International Telecommunications Union)
as its first Merchant Partner site in Africa for its ECDC (Electronic
Commerce for Developing Countries) initiative, and the site was officially
launched as the first bona fide fully secure E-commerce website in
Africa at Africa Telecom 1997 in Johannesburg during May of the same
year.
Despite
limited marketing due to its 'subsidiary' nature within the Uview
/ Steerage infrastructure, AISM
has nevertheless grown from strength to strength and now exists as
an entity on its own with its own subsidiaries in the form of the
very successful "Biltong
Online" and "Hand-made
wire Harley's" websites.
A
considerable amount of art and artifacts from practically all of the
sub-Saharan countries have been sold through AISM
to individuals, collectors and traders around the world, as well as
to institutions such as the Mask Museum in Mauritius and Disney's
Animal Kingdom in Florida.

In
1999 the directors of Uview / Steerage
decided that the country was finally ready for properly constructed
"local area" business and tourism information websites and
launched Peninsula Info. The site was an immediate success
and still exists in its original format. However ........ it has been
decided to develop the Peninsula Info concept into a far more
sophisticated "Local Area Network" concept to be developed
nationally under the name USENET.
